Have you remembered to give yourself some credit lately? It’s a weird question, I know, but I wonder if you’ve been too hard on yourself this week?
2020 was hard and for some of us 2021 was even more difficult. Several of my friends have been reminding me that I need to give myself space to grieve and time to rest and heal. That’s true and maybe you’re in that space?
Or maybe you’ve gotten to where I was a couple of weeks ago when I was just tired of feeling so terrible? I was tired of grieving, tired of focusing on everything awful that had happened, and tired of being so tired. I needed to inject some balance into my perspective.
For me, there’s “space to grieve” and then there’s “wallowing,” and it’s hard to tell when I cross the line. But I suddenly realized I was feeling shockingly similar to the way I’d felt 8 years ago when I was the most negative person I’d ever met.
2014 Mel was a real treat to be around. (Ummmm…. Not really)
I gossiped. I cried all the time. I focused only on what was wrong and even if something good happened, I waited for the other shoe to drop.
For someone who had been called “Smiley” in high school, I sure scowled a lot. When I looked in the mirror, I didn’t recognize myself.
I knew I had come so far from the person I was meant to be, but I had no idea how to get back on track.
Honestly, I spent a long time waiting for a solution to appear and when it didn’t I tried to resign myself to living an unhappy life. “Welp, this is just how it is. Life sucks and then you die.” 😳
But I couldn’t quite give up and I’m so glad I didn’t.
Now, I’m a totally different person. I look for the blessings even in the dark times, I get back up quickly when I get knocked down, and I truly believe in a bright future for myself and for you. If you put 2014 Mel and 2022 Mel into a room together, you’d see two completely different people. What changed?
I finally decided to kill off inauthentic, negative Past Mel and become the real version of myself. I had no idea how to do it and it took me about 5 years to figure it out, but I’m so grateful Past Mel made that choice and slogged through. And it was a slog!
