Bailey (dog) and I are starting Couch to 5k® again. Turns out if you totally let go of your running habit for 9 months, you lose a little ground.

I was talking to a friend this week about a challenge I’m facing and she said something that particularly resonated with me. She said:

You’re going to have to rely on your habits.

She reminded me I’ve worked hard for years to establish habits that help me keep my energy up and the good vibes flowing. Things like regular exercise, eating (mostly) healthy foods, meditating, praying, journaling, saying my affirmations… all things I do on a daily basis. I added those habits years ago when I was struggling with my own negativity and a fervent dislike of the person I was becoming.

Your habits can help you bypass motivation.

I mean really… how often do I feel motivated to work out? Maybe 50% of the time? But, because it’s a habit, I always keep my schedule unless I’m sick or injured.

What about you? What’s the thing you need to work on or do over and over, but you never feel like it? Do you need to establish a routine? Like writing every day, even if you don’t feel like it? Or meditating because you know it’s good for you, but you never “find time?”

Your habits can help you get through a tough season.

This. Is. True. Luckily, when my son first moved in (we adopted), I already had a pretty solid morning routine doing some of the habits I mentioned above. Without them, I’m not sure I could’ve made it through that initial disruption.

Your habits can help you maintain your health.

Exercise. Duh.

But also what about the habits of resting or drinking enough water or maintaining a healthy sleep schedule? They’re all vital and they’re all habits. When you have a habit of going to bed at certain time, you’re more likely to do it even if you want to watch an extra episode of that show. But… if you have a habit of always watching an extra episode (and sabotaging Future {{first_name}} who is always so tired from staying up too late) then that’s the habit you’ll continue to repeat.

It sort of seems like your habits are everything… amiright?

If that’s the case, what habit do you need to work on installing? Or reinstalling?

Take an honest look at your habits. If that’s too overwhelming, pick one area of your life (family, health, hobbies, self-care, career, spiritual/emotional health) to examine. If you’re not sure what to pick… choose your health.

Look at your habits and ask yourself: “What positive habits do I need to reinforce or start?”

Don’t overwhelm yourself. Just pick one and start working on it. Baby steps are better than no steps. Got it?

You’ve got this!
