Struggling with your habits? Read this.

Do you have a not-so-good habit you need to break? I can think of at least three things off the top of my head that probably aren’t the BEST habits for me to get into.(For one, I keep waking up in the middle of the night and turning off my alarm. 2AM Mel thinks it's a great idea; Starting-Work-Late Mel is less pleased.)

What about a habit you need to add? Maybe you’ve been working on adding a new habit and it’s not going quite how you’d like. Whether it’s something for your side hustle, your relationships, your health, your finances, or something different…

We know habits are key.

We know the majority of what we do each day is habit.

We even know what habits we need to break and which we need to add.

If we know all that, why is it so difficult to just DO THE THING? (Or not do the thing if it’s a habit we’re working on breaking.)

There’s so many things that could be going wrong in your habit-adding or habit-breaking, but one that I find we don’t talk about enough is this:

Focusing on the wrong thing.

I worked with a coaching client who came to me because she desperately wanted to write her book, but she couldn’t seem to create a writing habit. She understood what needed to happen, how many words she needed to write, and when she could fit it into her day. She had ALL THE STRATEGY, but couldn’t make herself Do The Thing.

Because she was focusing on the wrong thing.

Her book was important, but the area of her life that desperately needed her attention was her health. Once I finally convinced her to put her attention there, she not only saw improvements in wellbeing, she also started writing. (It’s really hard to be creative if you feel like garbage. When she felt better, she felt more creative.)

So when it comes to your habits, are you putting your focus where it belongs? Are you giving your attention to the area of your life that needs it most?

I’m going to give you a gift. This power sheet is from the first week of my DIY coaching program: Unlock Your 5-Star Future, but I’m going to give it to you for free. It’ll only take a few minutes, but don’t let its simplicity fool you. My students often tell me that it was a huge eye-opener.

Download the free worksheet and rate each area of your life from 1-5 stars.

The area that gets the lowest rating is the one that needs your attention.

That’s the area that needs a positive, new habit. Even if you REALLY WANT to open your Etsy store or learn how to go viral on TikTok to promote your business, if “career” is rated 4 stars and “self-care” is at a 2, you’re going to need to focus on self-care. Your life seeks balance and in focusing on your low-rated areas first, you’ll get trickle down benefits to other areas of your life.

Just like how when you exercise in the morning, you’re more likely to make other healthy choices throughout the day. Or when you have a great relationship with your partner, you’re more likely to take a risk in your business.
